Our local spot. Steady light sea breeze in Belmont with exceptional open beach and sandy bottom makes it a fantastic place to learn kiting. Plan on wind 12-6pm spring and summer and 2-5pm fall. As you improve you may advance to kite the surrounding beaches with waves. Water is cool and wetsuit advised. Winter full suit can find some wind as storms come through but its not reliable and can be high winds and gusty and not right for rookies. Most locals travel to warm or snowy destinations for winter fun. See my travel page for ideas and wind reports in spots around the world.
Please note that the wind prediction is not to be trusted. It often reads lower than actually occurs. See the example on the adjacent graph.
This screenshot is from windalert on the Iphone. You can see it shows the prediction at under 10mph, the actual was about 20mph. Also it shows the predicted and actual wind direction on the bottom arrows, yellow being the actual. Also shown buy the 3 colors of observed wind are the high, low and average, which if a tight grouping as here is not too gusty. Also the smooth curve here is not too up and down but a steady wind rising and falling during the day but no dramatic spikes or drops in the overall windspeed. By the way there were just a few kiters out this day as the prediction kept most away.
This seems to be a one way bias as if it predicts wind, its probably going to be windy.
You can subscribe to Windalert for a monthly fee, or use the free sailflow indicator for pier J to get a rough idea as it is the next closest sensor.
